Time-restricted eating doesn't appear to boost weight loss
Time-restricted eating, also known as intermittent fasting, is a dieting trend that involves limiting your food intake to a specific window of time. However, recent studies have shown that this type of eating does not aid in weight loss.
In a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, 547 participants tracked their daily meals for six months. The researchers found that the time of day the participants ate did not affect their weight. What did matter was the size of their meals. Participants who ate larger meals tended to gain weight, while those who ate smaller meals tended to lose weight.
Another study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found similar results. In this study, 116 men and women were randomly assigned to either eat within an eight-hour window or eat at normal times. After 12 weeks, both groups had lost a small amount of weight, but there was no significant difference between the two groups.
While time-restricted eating may not be effective for weight loss, it can still be beneficial for some people. Establishing temporal boundaries can help people eat fewer calories and plan healthier meals. However, it is important to remember that the best diet is one that a person can maintain and that time-restricted eating may not be for everyone.
